Universities
Belgium hosts several highly-ranked universities, including KU Leuven (founded 1425), Ghent University, ULB and VUB (Brussels), and UCLouvain.
- Many master's programmes are taught in English
- Application deadlines are often 6+ months before the academic year starts
- Non-EU/EEA tuition is noticeably higher than EU tuition — e.g. KU Leuven charges non-EU students roughly €4,447/year for a standard 60-credit master's, versus a much lower EU rate; partial waivers exist for students from lower-income countries or with strong academic records
Student Visa (Type D)
Indian students admitted to a Belgian institution need a long-stay Type D student visa, applied for through VFS Global after receiving an unconditional admission letter.
- 1Get an unconditional admission letter from a recognised Belgian institution
- 2Gather proof of funds, accommodation and (for English-taught programmes) proof of English proficiency such as IELTS 6.5+
- 3Apply for the Type D visa well before the semester start — the visa fee is approximately €180
- 4Register with the local municipality within 8 working days of arrival to obtain your residence permit (the full process takes around 2 months)
- Apply at least 2-3 months ahead of your intended start date
- The Type D visa is only valid for 3 months on its own — municipality registration converts it into your residence permit
Student Discounts
Student cards (often the university ID) unlock discounts on transport, museums and more.
- SNCB offers reduced-fare Go Pass tickets for under-26s
- Many museums offer free or discounted entry with a student card
Libraries
University and public libraries are generally open to residents and students, often with extended hours during exam periods.
